Can I buy a flight that connects and just use the second leg ticket?

ie. searching through flights from UAE to UK, I can get a direct flight from Abu Dhabi for about $500. Yet if I search from Bahrain to UK I can get a flight for $400 that connects in Abu Dhabi. So if I bought the latter, could I just use the AD>London ticket and forfeit the first leg?
