Am I allowed to drive in California with a driver's license issued in U.A.E?

I'm moving to Los Angeles from UAE for my studies and I wanted to know if I have to take a new permit there or if I can just drive with the license I have (UAE issued one)? I will be on student visa of course. If I am allowed to drive, is there a restriction to how many months I can drive with that or anything?
